'We apologize if this notice causes fear'

Rob Rosenberger, Vmyths co-founder
Monday, 22 December 1997 MIRABILIS WANTS TO dispel virus hoaxes surrounding their ICQ service. But Mirabilis fell for an old JPG/GIF virus hoax — and they warn customers to avoid graphic files. When asked for clarification, a Mirabilis employee replied:
"There are programs that can encode a virus into a jpeg/gif file. The operation mechanism of these viruses is unknown to us, but there were reports of these viruses on the net in the past few years. We rather give notice of that to our users instead of hearing from them when it's too late. We apologize if this notice causes fear among people."
