Bloat MP3 virus

CATEGORY: Hoax virus alerts

First seen in 1998, this elaborate hoax claims MP3 music files may carry a computer virus. The alert reads like an authentic press release — complete with references to McAfee Labs. Its professional appearance led some experts to question if a music industry executive created it in a fit of anger. PA News showbusiness correspondent Anthony Barnes added fuel to the debate in a 14 Jun 00 newswire:

Industry figures also pointed out users could inadvertently download material they do not want in their system like viruses. "You think you're getting Oops ... I Did It Again by Britney Spears but you could be getting oops, the I Love You virus," said [EMI Recorded Music SrVP Jay] Samit.
