Truth About Computer Security Hysteria
An open letter to the CISO of the American Red Cross

DEAR MR. BAKLARZ,

An open letter to Ron Baklarz, the Chief Information Security Officer for the American Red Cross...

In the "Holistic Antivirus Strategies" webcast you gave today, I asked why you'd urge companies to buy two products or services that routinely fail to detect new viruses — when they could instead buy one product or service with a 100% virus detection guarantee. You responded:
"I don't think that you're going to have one vendor that can even make that claim... If anybody knows of the one vendor that can absolutely guarantee 100% virus mitigation, then I'll be the first in line to talk to them."
I can name two antivirus vendors right off the top of my head:
- MessageLabs was the first to offer a 100% virus detection guarantee for companies, or your money back. They've been offering a money-back guarantee since at least 2001.
- Avecho offers a 100% virus detection guarantee for companies, or your money back. The front page of their website brags "avecho.com has operated without passing a single email virus, worm or trojan since 2002."
If your "holistic antivirus strategy" can't stop new viruses, then you need to implement a better strategy. Please read this column when you stand in line to talk to the firms I mentioned.
Most Sincerely,
Rob Rosenberger, editor
